The homework looks good. But did they learn?
AI can write an answer in seconds. Your child may have used it to think more deeply or simply accepted whatever it gave them.








What to say
Start with curiosity.
Your child may already be using AI for homework, perhaps in ways you cannot easily see. Homework may be finished quicker and look better than some of their previous work. That does not automatically mean they are trying to cheat. They may be starting to think this is just how homework is done now.
Rather than try to catch them, find out what they understood. Can they explain what they handed in?

Say these in your own words.
If they cannot explain what they submitted.
Do not panic, this is the most common situation, and it is fixable. The goal is not to punish. Go back to the part they did not understand and work through it together. Tonight, not next week.
If they say everyone uses it.
They are probably right. That isn’t the point. The point is whether they understand the work, not whether they used the tool. Let them know you are asking them to know the difference between AI helping and AI doing.
If it didn’t go as planned.
“I reacted before I understood. I want to try this again. Show me how you used AI, and let’s figure out together what helped and what did not.”
What to know
The answer is the easy part. The learning is the point.
A child can type a homework question into AI and get a correct answer in seconds. The work may look complete, but the child may not understand it. That is the risk: finished work without finished learning.
AI can help with homework, or do it.
Both are possible. Using AI to explain, check, or practise is different from using AI to produce the final answer without understanding it.
Teachers may have different expectations.
Some allow AI for brainstorming or checking. Some don’t. Some are still working it out. If you’re not sure, ask the teacher.
Your child may be using AI better than you think.
Some children use it carefully, to explain, to practise, to check thinking. Ask them to show you. You may learn something about how they think.
The reliable first check is explanation.
Ask your child to explain one part of the work back to you. Not the whole thing. One part.
AI can support learning when it's used well. A child might use AI to:

Get unstuck on one part

Explain a concept in a different way

Quiz themselves before a test

Check their working

Practise after they’ve tried first
At its best, a child uses AI as a thinking partner, sharing what they already think, asking AI to challenge or extend it, and building an answer that's genuinely theirs.
What changes with age
The conversation looks different at each stage of growing up.
An eight-year-old is still learning what AI is. A thirteen-year-old already knows. The conversation needs to match where they are, the question that helps at one age can feel like surveillance at the next.
Which age is your child?
Gen DubAI is designed for families with children in late childhood and early adolescence. These years are when many children begin using digital tools more independently and when parents and caregivers can still strongly shape habits, boundaries, and judgment. The age range is informed by broad developmental research. Around 11 to 12, many children begin moving from more concrete thinking toward more abstract reasoning. By 13 to 15, children often seek more independence, rely more on peers, and encounter more complex digital situations. This does not mean guidance is no longer needed after 15. It means this guide is focused on the years where early family guidance can have strong preventative value. Every child develops differently. Use the age guidance as a starting point, not a strict rule.
Start with how, not whether.
Ask your child to explain one part of the homework, without looking at the screen. If they can explain it, that's a good sign the learning is happening. If they can't, that's the part to work on together.
"Did you use AI?" can feel like an accusation. Start here instead:

Children at this age may not yet see the difference between AI helping and AI doing it for them. Help them name it.
Add disclosure and judgment.
At this age, the check is about explanation, disclosure, and judgment. The conversation shifts from "Can you explain it?" to "What was yours, what did AI help with, and does that fit what the school expects?"

If they can't draw that line, help them draw it. If you're not sure about the school's rules, ask the teacher. It helps everyone start from the same place.
Something to try
The AI Homework Ladder.
There are two ways to handle AI and homework. Check afterwards, and you may find AI did most of the work. Or agree on its role before your child starts. One makes you an inspector. The other makes you a coach.
Start with the work itself. What are they working on, and where might they get stuck? If AI is allowed for this task, agree the boundary together before they start.
When your child says they "used AI", it can mean very different things. The ladder helps you and your child understand the difference.

I shared what I already thought. AI challenged and built on it. The answer was still mine.

AI helped me understand something I was stuck on.

Revisit the ladder as your child grows. Challenge your child to go one rung higher. Make it yours.
