The homework looks good. But did they learn?

AI can write an answer in seconds. Your child may have used it to think more deeply or simply accepted whatever it gave them.

What to say

Start with curiosity.

Your child may already be using AI for homework, perhaps in ways you cannot easily see. Homework may be finished quicker and look better than some of their previous work. That does not automatically mean they are trying to cheat. They may be starting to think this is just how homework is done now.

Rather than try to catch them, find out what they understood. Can they explain what they handed in?

What to know

The answer is the easy part. The learning is the point.

A child can type a homework question into AI and get a correct answer in seconds. The work may look complete, but the child may not understand it. That is the risk: finished work without finished learning.

AI can support learning when it's used well. A child might use AI to:

At its best, a child uses AI as a thinking partner, sharing what they already think, asking AI to challenge or extend it, and building an answer that's genuinely theirs.

What changes with age

The conversation looks different at each stage of growing up.

An eight-year-old is still learning what AI is. A thirteen-year-old already knows. The conversation needs to match where they are, the question that helps at one age can feel like surveillance at the next.

Which age is your child?

Gen DubAI is designed for families with children in late childhood and early adolescence. These years are when many children begin using digital tools more independently and when parents and caregivers can still strongly shape habits, boundaries, and judgment. The age range is informed by broad developmental research. Around 11 to 12, many children begin moving from more concrete thinking toward more abstract reasoning. By 13 to 15, children often seek more independence, rely more on peers, and encounter more complex digital situations. This does not mean guidance is no longer needed after 15. It means this guide is focused on the years where early family guidance can have strong preventative value. Every child develops differently. Use the age guidance as a starting point, not a strict rule.

The AI Homework Ladder.

There are two ways to handle AI and homework. Check afterwards, and you may find AI did most of the work. Or agree on its role before your child starts. One makes you an inspector. The other makes you a coach.

Start with the work itself. What are they working on, and where might they get stuck? If AI is allowed for this task, agree the boundary together before they start.

When your child says they "used AI", it can mean very different things. The ladder helps you and your child understand the difference.

The goal is for them to recognise that not all AI use is the same, and to use AI wisely. Not for AI to quietly take over the thinking.

Revisit the ladder as your child grows. Challenge your child to go one rung higher. Make it yours.
